Certified food, lifestyle and wellness coach Andi Lew, is one inspirational (and busy) woman. Here she chats with us about her life and healthly living tips.
Andi you’re life has been an incredible journey of health and wellness!
Your health is your wealth. It’s about the only thing you can invest in, in the economic climate that guarantees a return! I’ve actually always been passionate about drug free, natural health care from ever since I can remember.
Was there ever an ‘aha’ moment?
When I was 5 I remember my parents trying to force me to take cough medicine and I was vehemently opposed. I knew I hated smoking and loved real foods. Mum had always instilled in us to never eat junk foods and she’s a great cook, so I was inspired from an early age.
That being said, I had really bad sciatica (a nerve that runs from your pelvis down your leg, that becomes choked through misalignment of the spine and pelvis). I had no idea this was the cause and just experienced tightness and soreness. After having my first chiropractic adjustment to realign my spine and pelvis and set the trapped nerve free, I was a whole new person. My whole leg wasn’t numb anymore and I started experiencing better digestion because the same nerves that run down the leg also branch off to the digestive system. I started to lose weight. Over 6 months I lost about 8 kg.
What inspired you to write your first book?
Having such a great chiropractic experience inspired me to write my first book – 7 Things Your Doctor Forgot to Tell You – with Dr Warren Sipser. I love how with chiropractic care it’s about addressing the cause, not just the symptom.
What inspired you to write ‘Eat Fat, Be Lean’ with Dr Natalie Kringoudis?
It came as a result of the success of Eat Fat Be Thin, which was all about good fats and avoiding sugars but being able to have sweets still (that are with natural sugar alternatives). Through developing and promoting that book we learned that people wanted savoury recipes and Paleo information. So we wrote this 6 months later. Dr Nat was asked to join me because of her understanding of how good fats help to fuel hormones.
What’s your favourite sugar free, wheat free and dairy free recipe?
Probably the orange and chia seed cake! It’s a winner. Everybody gets it right!
You’re a certified Wellness Coach – tell us, what does a Wellness Coach do?
There’s a very comprehensive nutrition component, but mostly I like that fact that it’s like being a counsellor but coaching looks to the future and where you want to be not the past and where you were. It helps build one’s self efficacy and self confidence. I love helping people be better versions of themselves.
Top 5 tips for Wellness?
- Get regular chiropractic care
- Move more, sit less
- Take deep breaths when you feel stressed. Thoughts change and this too, shall pass
- Have an attitude of gratitude
- Listen to wellness podcasts and read blogs or good health books to stay inspired.
What’s a life-defining moment you’ve experienced that’s shaped your decisions to be where you are now?
If it wasn’t for Dr John Demartini who is a best selling author and contributor of The Secret, I may not be a writer. After a seminar I did with him, I asked him to write the foreword to my first book and he said yes, so within days he has read it, because he’s a speed reader and then sent a beautiful foreword and it still inspires me!
I’ve also learned everyone will have an opinion of you, but you always know what’s right for you. My mum used to always say, “If you have to ask the question, you already know the answer.”
Lastly, what’s next in the life of Andi?
I’m releasing a food line and I’m also speaking as part of the line-up for the Real Food Revolution speakers and I’ve shot a pilot for a new TV show. So stay tuned!
