No matter how it may seem, raising a family isn’t easy. In today’s fast-paced world it can seem as if there’s so much to do but very little time. As a result, our lifestyle choices are not always what is best for us, and our wellbeing takes a back seat. That said, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and healthy family, can help battle a ton of common health problems such as obesity, heart diseases, and high blood pressure.
While staying healthy and fit is a great, many put safety measures and back-up plans in place, in the form of emergency savings accounts and family health insurance because when it comes to your loved ones, there’s no compromise.
While you can protect your family with health insurance, here are 7 ways you and your family achieve optimal wellness:
1. Develop healthy eating habits
You should focus on developing healthy eating habits in your household from a young age so that your kids follow this path from the get go.
Four million adult Australians, or 26 per cent of the population, are overweight or obese. This figure is even higher in the United States. As a family, you should share at least one meal a day. You can also take meal suggestions from your children, as they can help plan and prep at least one meal each week. Take your children for grocery shopping and teach your kids about different healthy foods.
2. Play together
Families that play together, stay together! Any type of physical activity is a must for both children and adults for a healthy family. There are so many options to choose from, including running, swimming or even engaging in some sports. As the head of the family, you must make sure that your family plays together every day. You must also teach your children how to engage in outdoor activities like basketball, riding a bike, etc. Not only is this good for your family’s overall health, but it also gives you time to bond with them.
3. Establish no-phone zones
While technology has been a blessing, it has also resulted in less face-to-face interactions. From children to adults – everyone is engrossed in using their smart-phone devices. Establish ground rules for using any type of technology. Spend time with your whole family in your living room keep any screens off-limits for a few hours.
4. Communicate with each other
The key to a healthy relationship is communication and well, to achieve optimal wellness, you need to engage in healthy communication. Spending quality time with your family, even if it’s over a meal will give you time to talk, discuss and share things with them. It’s a great opportunity to establish healthy communication amongst family members.
5. Thank each other often
This may seem like an underrated factor, but emotional wellbeing is as important as physical health. Expressing gratitude for and appreciating a family member for doing something good, will help you bond as a family. Studies show that being grateful makes us happier and healthier, and that children who write gratitude letters are happier than those who don’t.
6. Split household chores amongst each other
Don’t do everything by yourself. Make it a habit to engage your children in household chores from a young age. This will help make them more independent and efficient when they grow up. Additionally, a family is all about helping each other. So, divide the household chores amongst each other.
7. Wind down together at the end of the day
After you have a strenuous day at work and your children have a tiring day at school, you need to wind down. The best way to do this is together – as a family! Spend an hour or so before bed with your family where you can play indoor games or just relax and interact with each other.
Developing a healthy lifestyle and routine early on will be beneficial for you and your family. Although people refer to healthy eating and exercising as wellness, in reality, wellness is so much more than that. Children imitate and look up to their parents, so it’s crucial that you strive to set a good example for them to follow.
