Self-care is something we all know we should be doing, but too often it can feel like just another thing we need to get done. And when self-care feels like a chore, it’s not something we we’re going to maintain. But, with a ‘loves list’ in hand, it’s actually really simple to practice self-care that you love and look forward to.
What is a ‘loves list’?
A loves list is a list of everything and anything you love to do. It can be any activity or action that makes you feel good. Put simply, it’s a list that reminds you of everything that you enjoy doing. It gives you ideas of how to add self-care practices into your day, whether you have 5 minutes or a whole day available.
For example, my loves list includes:
- Walking along the beach
- Going to yoga
- Spending time in nature
- Sipping tea when I first wake up
- Writing poetry.
How having a loves list can transform your self-care
I know first-hand that only having one particular self-care routine can begin to feel a little flat after a while. But by writing and referring to my loves list, it reminds me of all of the many different things that I love to do. Having a loves list has showed me that my self-care can be so much more than just journaling and meditating in the morning. And that alone revitalised my self-care practice.
With my loves list in hand, I can pick and choose whatever activity sounds best on any given day. If I don’t feel like going to yoga, I can head down to the beach instead. If I don’t feel like journaling, I can pick up a good book instead.
Having a loves list means that no matter how I feel or what mood I’m in, I can always find something to do to help me feel good.

Some of the things I love to do only take a few minutes, whereas some of them I can easily devote a day to. No matter much time I have, I can always find something on my loves list that will fit in. Some days that’s just taking 10 minutes to drink a cup of tea before diving into a jam-packed day, and some other days I have time to go and take a 90 minute yoga class.
Self-care is all about finding what works for you and your lifestyle – and a loves list allows that. It doesn’t matter if I have 5 minutes, an hour, or a whole afternoon to spare because I’ll be able to find something on my loves list to do. With a loves list, I no longer use the excuse of not having enough time as a reason to blow off my self-care.
How can you create your own loves list?
Creating a loves list is super easy. All you need to do is write a list of the things you absolutely love to do. The activities that bring you joy and that you relish doing. No matter how big or how small something is, if you love it, write it down.
You might like to write this in your journal, on your phone, or type it up and print it out, or write it on a post-it note that you can stick on your mirror.
If you’re stuck for ideas here are a few suggestions:
- Getting a message
- Reading for a few minutes or a few hours
- Laying in the grass and watching the clouds float past
- Walking in the park
- Going to the beach
- Swimming in the ocean
- Playing with your pet
- Dancing to your favourite song.
My favourite thing about having a loves list – you can add new items to it and remove ones that no longer feel so good. This list is not something set in stone and it can grow and change with you.
A loves list is an easy, uncomplicated way to find joy in your self-care practice every single time.
