Melissa Chu, Yoga Teacher & Founder of conscious yoga wear label Rumi, shares 5 practical ways to detox and feel energise:
1. Drink plenty of water
Staying hydrated and drinking water is a natural way of cleansing and flushes out built up toxins and waste out of your body. It is recommended to drink natural spring water which retains the vital minerals, and at least 2 litres per day.
2. Be active each day
Whether having a vigorous workout or opting to take the stairs instead of the elevator, staying active is a good practice to have as a regular part of your everyday life, energising your mind and body. Being active boosts blood circulation which in turn powers your cardiovascular circulation and lymphatic circulatory system which is responsible for flushing out toxins. Aim for at least 30 minutes a day.
3. Get proper rest
When you get 7-8 hours of deep sleep each night, not only do you wake up feeling energised but you give your body a chance to recuperate. This is your body’s time to work on those detoxifying organs such as your liver and kidneys, not to mention your brain detox. Your body cleanses itself while you sleep, with the liver doing a lot of its dirty work in the early morning hours.
4. Do yoga
The benefits of yoga are endless! Yoga helps to detoxify your body and mind. Plus for more sweaty practices, it’s a great detoxifier for one of your largest organs, the skin! The best asanas (poses) for detoxifying are forwards bends which are amazing for helping to massage the internal organs, and promotes cleansing and detox of those organs. Other great asanas are twists (standing or seated) which wring out your digestive organs while you are in your twist, promoting digestion, elimination and the flow of fluids through the lymphatic system.
5. Detox your beauty regime
I love using natural, unprocessed, food-based, homemade beauty concoctions as part of my daily self-care routine. One of my favourite products is coconut oil. It does wonders for your skin, complexion and hair. You can find endless facial, hair mask, and beauty recipes online that use everyday products such as lemon, apple cider vinegar, yogurt, oatmeal and honey. Yum!
